Insertion Orders Intro
±4 minutes
We recommend creating insertion orders via the Planning tool for accurate inventory assessment. Direct insertion order creation is also possible but offers less inventory visibility.
Introduction
After Planning, campaigns launch as insertion orders. How you plan and group your campaigns—whether by state, DMA, or venue type—can lead to multiple campaigns under one insertion order. Insertion orders have a one-to-many relationship with campaigns.
Insertion orders define the contractual relationship between you (the media buyer) and the media owner. They're a fundamental part of programmatic and traditional ad buying. This is because they ensure that both parties agree on key elements before the campaign runs.
Insertion orders add value through:
Grouping Associated Campaigns: Insertion orders can include multiple campaigns. During Planning, you segment your campaigns by state, DMA, venue type, media owner, and/or city. Grouping allows you to track performance across the different segments.
Transparency: Insertion orders prevent misunderstandings by documenting agreed-to metrics and expectations. These metrics and expectations can include flight dates, budget, pacing, and so on.
Budget and Spend Control: Advertisers use insertion orders to assign specific campaign budgets.
Delivery Tracking: Insertion orders provide real-time delivery tracking. This ensures campaigns are pacing to meet agreed impression or budget targets.

What You’ll Learn
In this topic, you’ll learn:
Access Insertion Orders Table View
To access the Insertion Orders table view, you’ll:
Log in to Vistar's DSP at trafficking.vistarmedia.com.
Using the side navigation, click Insertion Orders.
Insertion Orders Page Elements
The Insertion Orders page shows an empty table if you haven't created an insertion order through Planning or are new to the Demand Side Platform (DSP). An Add Insertion Order button lets you create new orders. Later visits show the table listing your created orders with the Active tab selected. To make it easy to find and manage your insertion orders, they’re separated across tabs - Active, Upcoming, and Past. These tabs act as filters.
Active tab: Selected by default. This page shows active insertion orders valid for delivering ads on designated Digital Out-of-Home (DOOH) screens. An order is active if the current date falls within the insertion order's start and end flight dates.
Upcoming tab: Here, you’ll see upcoming insertion orders intended to run as part of a future advertising campaign. An order is upcoming if the current date is BEFORE the insertion order's flight dates.
Past tab: Here, you’ll see past insertion orders showing the terms of a completed DOOH advertising campaign. An order is in the past if the current date is AFTER the insertion order's flight dates.
The Insertion Orders table shows the following columns:
| Table Column | Description |
|---|---|
Advertiser |
The name of the advertiser associated with your insertion order. |
Budget |
The target amount of money that Vistar will attempt to spend buying impressions or the number of impressions that Vistar will attempt to buy. Monetary budgets use the total cost based on the amount of money invoiced to your account for using Vistar's DSP. |
Start Date |
The start date of your insertion order. Together your start and end dates are the flight dates. |
End Date |
The end date of your insertion order. Together your start and end dates are the flight dates. |
Profit Margin |
This field shows if you apply revenue tracking to your insertion order. Profit Margin is the total cost, which also includes the cost of media, audiences and measurement solutions if applicable. The calculation for this field is: Advertiser Cost - Total Cost / Advertiser Cost. |
Progress |
Shows for active, upcoming, and past orders. This is a colored indicator showing the progress of budget spend. Depending on your setup, this progress indicator may refer to a monetary budget or the number of impressions. Below the colored indicator, you’ll see always-on impression information. For example, the number of impressions or monetary value delivered in relation to the budget set. Progress is also represented as a percentage within the impression information.

Selecting a column header sorts the table based on the selected column. The first click sets descending sort order (Z to A, or 9 to 0). The second click sets ascending sort order (A to Z, or 0 to 9).
